It's all about how you mix it
The running properties of a tyre's rubber compound are largely determined by three interacting factors - static friction [grip], rolling resistance and mileage. The dilemma: If you improve one of these factors, at least one other will deteriorate in return. A tyre with maximum grip wears more quickly and rolls more slowly. If you make the tyre faster or more durable, its grip is reduced.

With Conti Black Chili Compound, a tread compound that is always based on the latest findings in polymer and raw material research, Conti has provided the cycling scene with a lasting answer. Depending on the area of use of a tyre, we adjust the compound recipe specifically - whether for road bikes or mountain bikes, for time trials or downhill.

For Black Chili, we refine special synthetic rubbers with proven natural rubber to create particularly high-performance tread compounds. We then add carbon black particles to these compounds, which in turn are optimised in terms of shape and surface properties.
